The problem

Baker Tilly had just moved into 640m² of converted warehouse. Exposed steel trusses, polished terrazzo, floor-to-ceiling glass to native bush. Architecturally, perfect. Emotionally, cold. The team was sitting inside a showroom.

The brief

Claire called in late February. "Make it feel like ours." No spec, no plant list, no budget ceiling. Just a feeling we needed to find.

The feeling we wanted

The warehouse should still read as a warehouse. No suburban fakery. But warm enough that the team would make coffee instead of leaving at 5:03.

The solution

Fourteen custom plywood planter boxes, matched to the existing reception joinery. Forty-six plants across five species, mostly ficus, philodendron, kentia palm, bird of paradise, and one feature fiddle leaf fig anchoring the stairwell. Installed over two days.

The result

Six months on, nothing has died. The ficus by reception threw a 40cm growth flush in March. Claire writes every fortnight with plant questions. That's the job done.

We're Calla. We do the plants. Bespoke fit-outs for commercial interiors in the Waikato. A handful of the Hamilton offices you'd know are ours.

Should we swap the mezzanine piece?

The rubber plant on the mezzanine has officially outgrown its pot. I'd swap for something more sculptural. We have a monstera deliciosa in the greenhouse that would own that corner. Happy to pop by next week — Thursday or Friday morning both work.
